About the Author

Dr Edward A. Smith, Jr. Captain U.S.N. (Ret), is the author of Effects-Based Operations: Applying Network Centric Warfare in Peace, Crisis, and War published by US DoD Cooperative C4ISR Research Project (CCRP) in 2003 and of a new book, Complexity, Networking, and Effects-Based Operations, to be published shortly by the CCRP. During a 30-year Navy career, he served in Vietnam and on the staff of the Battle Force US Sixth Fleet during the Achille Lauro and Libyan contingencies in 1986 and 1987. He also served in the Defense Intelligence Agency, on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief, Atlantic Command and Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic, in the Office of Naval Intelligence, and on the personal staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. Upon his retirement from the Navy he joined the Boeing Company’s Studies & Analysis think tank as Executive Strategist. edward.a.smith-jr@boeing.com.
