About the Author
Alexander Downer is a former Australian Liberal Party politician who was Foreign Minister of Australia from March 1996 to December 2007. He was also the Leader of the Opposition for eight months from 1994 to 1995. He held the parliamentary seat of Mayo continuously from 1984 to his retirement from Parliament in July 2008. Mr Downer was appointed the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus at the level of Under-Secretary General in July 2008. He is Visiting Professor of Politics and International Trade in the School of History and Politics at the University of Adelaide.
