About the Author

Major General J. G. (John) Caligari, DSC, AM is the Australian Army’s Head of Modernisation and Strategic Planning. He is a graduate of the Royal Military College, Duntroon. His command and operational service includes duty with the United Nations in Palestine; as an infantry company commander and subsequently Operations Officer in Somalia in 1993; in 2000 as Commander 1st Battalion Ready Group for the evacuation of Australians from the Solomon Islands, and later with the United Nations in East Timor; in 2007-08 as Commander 3rd Brigade; and in 2009 as Australian National Commander in Afghanistan. Major General Caligari holds an undergraduate degree in Arts, and postgraduate degrees in Defence Studies and Arts (Strategic Studies). He is a graduate of the US Command and General Staff College, the Australian Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies, and the US Army War College Joint and Coalition Force Land Component Commanders Course. He was Chief of Army’s Visiting Fellow at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, ANU and has completed the Harvard Australia Leadership Program.
